Digital Perm Melbourne: Long‑Lasting Waves Designed for Asian Hair

Digital perm (also called hot perm) has become the go‑to for Asian hair in Melbourne because it creates soft, natural-looking waves that last for months without the tight frizz of old‑school perms. The key difference is temperature‑controlled rods that gently shape the hair while a protein solution rebuilds bonds.

LUXM Salons offers digital perm using Shiseido Professional systems — one of the few salons in Melbourne to do so. Their stylists have completed advanced training in hot perm techniques.

How digital perm differs from cold perm

Cold perm – Uses room‑temperature rods and a strong alkaline solution. Results are tight, springy curls that often look unnatural on Asian hair.

Digital perm – Uses ceramic rods that heat to a precise temperature (usually 100‑140°C). The heat softens the hair's hydrogen bonds, then a neutraliser locks the new shape. The result is loose, beachy waves or soft body waves.

Who is a good candidate?

Natural straight Asian hair that won't hold curl from a curling iron.

Wavy Asian hair that wants a more defined pattern.

Hair that has not been bleached or heavily highlighted (bleached hair can melt under the heat). LUXM will do a strand test first.

The digital perm process at LUXM (2.5‑4 hours)

Wash with clarifying shampoo – Removes oil and product.

Rod selection – Larger rods (22‑30mm) for loose waves; smaller rods (15‑20mm) for tighter curls.

First solution – A thio‑based solution breaks the disulfide bonds. Processing time 15‑25 minutes.

Rinse and dry – Hair is rinsed but kept on rods, then blow‑dried.

Heating – The rods are connected to a digital perm machine that heats them evenly.

Cooling – Rods cool completely (10‑15 minutes).

Second solution (neutraliser) – Reforms bonds in the new shape.

Remove rods and final rinse – You'll see the full wave pattern immediately.

Aftercare for digital perm

No washing for 72 hours – Water will undo the neutralisation.

No tying or tucking – Bends will create dents.

Use a wide‑tooth comb only – Brushes will break the wave pattern.

Scrunch with a leave‑in curl cream – Reactivates the shape after washing.

Cost at LUXM

$300 – $600 depending on length and rod quantity. Thick Asian hair may need 40‑50 rods, which increases time and price.

FAQ

How long does a digital perm last on Asian hair?

6‑9 months. As your hair grows, the new growth will be straight, but the permed ends will hold until you cut them off.

Can I blow‑dry my hair straight after a digital perm?

Yes, but heat will temporarily relax the waves. Once you wash it again, the waves return. Over time (months of blow‑drying straight), the perm will loosen.

Does digital perm damage Asian hair?

Less than a cold perm because the heat allows a weaker chemical solution. However, over‑processing can cause dryness. LUXM includes a Kerastase treatment after every perm.
